Does Nature respect (gauge) Symmetry?

I will discuss the symmetry between the electromagnetic and weak interactions and the mechanism of its breaking. This mechanism leads to one unabsorbed degree of freedom, which is realized as a fundamental scalar, aka Higgs boson or the God particle. This could be a resonance at 125 GeV recently discovered by CMS and Atlas collaborations. I will discuss the road to discovery and the measurements that need to take place to prove that the discovered particle is indeed responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking.
