Background
Shul is believed to be the progenitor of the Western race, but also non-Westerners can be attuned to him. Shul has several pillars. It is believed that Shul does not like weakness and will destroy or take over other pillars. The only known destruction of another pillar is Mercayen. It is said that the Westerners summoned Shul during the war. He entered through an opened portal and destroyed the pillar. Other pillars with the color Silver are said to be targets of the followers of Shul. Information has it that there are 4 pillars of Shul on the continent: one of them is located in the northern Badlands.
The dragons have corroborated that Shul's goal was to destroy the Mercayan pillar which serves as her anchor to the world. Thus, Mercayan is in a state of exile. The damage is theorized to be reversible, but the aftereffect of the Ruined Land is acting as a sort of rebuffing wind that makes it harder for her to establish a connection. Shul is breaking some known rules about the dragons, believing that his superiority makes him above the rules. As a result, a coalition of dragons opposed to him is growing and others who have left are returning to the world and their pillars.
In the wake of the war his followers waged, humans have begun appearing with great power yet no alignment with a pillar. It is unknown if these aberrations are related to his own breaking of the rules.
Shul has tangled with King Cyax directly, an unaligned aberration who repelled Shul in their one on one duel. Veckra is said to have evenly matched them but quickly fled the battle. While Shul marks this as weakness, Veckra's demeanor suggests that he grew disinterested in conflict. Whether warranted arrogance or not, Veckra believes himself to be on Shul's level. He is philosophically opposed to Shul's bending of the rules. Shul is also known to have tangled with Jurlin who has given him sustained equal resistance through the ages, though not much is known of the green dragon Jurlim today. The Silver Foxes also believe he is behind LeShrac's march on Brenthia and subsuming of Equinos.
Despite frequently bending the rules of the dragons' contract ala blood magic and suppression, he has not outright broken any of the rules governing their behavior.
Shul was not the original red pillar. He was originally a red and green dragon before he replaced his progenitor, Aeonus, at the table. Shul's hatred of Mercayen was so strong that Mercayen sought protection from Aeonus. Serosan is a child of Shul.
Xisben claims that Shul can be killed, but to do so one must destroy his heart and whatever else is keeping him alive.
This claim was proven by the Silver Foxes after Xisben's passing. Provoked by the Foxes and Mercayen's return to the world, Shul flew to the Serac Desert with his Sentinel and five legionnaires on his back. Intercepted by Chracio, his legionnaires wrought havoc on the city while Shul circled Chracio in the snowy skies of the far off land he was teleported to. Forced into a truce by Pan, Shul crushed the silver and white dragon with his claw and did battle against the combined forces of Chracio, Reck, and Mercayen as his Sentinel squared off against the Silver Foxes. He slew Reck first, prompting Emeri to join the battle in his brother's place. And soon came close to slaying Chracio as well, although the silver and black dragon was saved by the intervention of one of Chracio's Sentinels, the Glad of War.
However, as he squared off with his remaining two opponents, the Foxes put an end to his Sentinel, and the Glad of War put his fatally wounded dragon down. Bobbi, of the Silver Foxes, collected the dragon souls of the three dragons that Shul had killed for Aeonus, who used these souls to make Shul mortal. In this state, the Foxes, aided by Cadence, were able to finally kill Shul.
