You feel a bit ashamed, but realize that this will slow down the large lizard that's after you, so you leap past the three and continue on, hoping to retrace their path to a way out.
You continue to run for several minutes before slowing to a jog, and finally a walk. The large tunnel is starting to get a bit smaller, and descend again, rather than going up. You start to wonder if you missed a turn that you should have taken, but turning around means possibly facing the lizards that you know are behind you.
The tunnel splits, and splits again. You try to keep track of which turns you take, but soon you start to wonder if you aren't going in circles, as so many of the tunnels look the same.
Eventually, you do come to a dead end, and are forced to backtrack. Occasionally you hear hissing sounds, but they are far off, carried by the echoes of the tunnels. All of the passages you find only continue to go down, deeper into the earth. Every turn you make seems to guide you along a worse path than the one you were on.
Finally, you collapse on the ground to rest. As you do, you realize that the batteries on your headlamp are dying. You curse yourself for not having brought extra batteries. As the light fades, you start to hear hissing sounds. Far off at first, but coming steadily closer. You realize that they'd been following you, waiting for your to get tired, and for your lamp to die, the one thing that would keep them at bay. You lay back against the wall of the tunnel and watch the dim light slowly go out. As it does, you begin to make out silhouettes of lizards, making their way down the tunnel toward you.
The End.
