You race into the tunnel leading up, hoping to find a passage leading to the surface. As you do, you hear the lizard giving chase, with perhaps several more joining in to give pursuit.
As you are running, you begin to smell sulfur, and the temperature rises quickly. Your eyes make out a soft glow and as you round a corner, the heat throws you against a wall, saving your life. About ten feet below you, a lava flow is cutting its way through the rock, belching smoke and heat. You are okay for the moment, but should not stay very long if you can help it. The ledge you are standing on is stable, and curves off to the right where you cannot see. Another ledge and path, more narrow than the one you are on, is on the far side of the lava, about six feet away. You begin to make your way along the ledge when the lizards behind you appear. One comes forward. You are able to grab it and force it into the lava. It hisses violently as it drops, but is dead by the time it hits the lava. The others hold back. You smile smugly at them, then turn to continue down the ledge, confident they will not follow.
But, as you turn, you are greeted by several more lizards approaching from the opposite direction. You can try to fight your way through, or try leaping to the far ledge and continue to escape.
