Grabbing a spear from a dropped guard, you rush up behind and catch the lizards by surprise. There are five of them, and you manage to drop the first one before they even realize you are there.
Four.
The one closest to you turns to see what has happened, and you plunge your spear into its side.
Three.
The others all turn to face you, and you realize with horror that they are on opposite sides, so you won't be able to attack without exposing yourself to an attack. But the Princess is no slouch with a spear either, and with a well placed strike, is able to skewer two at once.
One.
The last one curls up and lunges at you, but you've seen that pattern before and are ready for it. You parry the leap and kill the creature before it lands. The Princess looks over at you and smiles.
Another violent rumbling makes the victory all too fleeting. The girl takes your hand and you both rush out of the infirmary. Above you, you can hear the sound of rocks cracking. It sounds like the entire place might cave in. The Princess seems to think the same thing. She guides you through the city, avoiding skirmishes with lizards until you find yourself on a trail leading to an innocuous looking dwelling against the wall of the cavern. There are still a few guards nearby, and they follow you in.
Inside, you find there is a narrow tunnel leading out of the city. Behind you, you can hear rocks falling. Big ones. The entire cavern is caving in! Your group plunges into the tunnel to escape the dust and rocks. The sound is awful, but the silence that follows feels even worse.
You travel quietly for nearly an hour. The tunnel never opens to a more wide thoroughfare. It remains quite narrow the entire time. Eventually, you emerge into another large cavern of a similarly large city. Ahead of you, several people rejoice to see that the Princess is still alive, but many of the women and children are crying when they see how few of the men made it out alive.
This chamber is noticeably warmer than the previous. You also notice that it's more humid. Looking around, you spot a hot spring lining one side of the chamber.
You also see a lot of men with spears gathering near several gates. There is easily more here than would normally live here, and you wonder how many of them have been displaced by attacks similar to the one you just survived. The men look very tired, and more than a little scared. You wonder how many more times they can fall back. There are clusters of guards at every gate. This may very well be the last stand.
The princess pulls you to near the center of the cavern and points up. You are momentarily blinded by a narrow beam of sunlight pouring into the chamber. There is a knotted rope leading up and out. The rope looks very old, but easily still strong enough to support your weight. She points over to the gates, but also up. You realize she's giving you a choice: Stay and fight or leave.
