Jumping past the man you grab his spear and whip around to face the lizard as it leaps at him. You manage to stab forward quickly enough to deflect the lizard's attack and knock it on its side. Without hesitating, it leaps up and lunges again, this time at you.
Time seems to slow down, you watch almost on autopilot, as you guide the spear up to stab the lizard in the neck and pin it to the wall. Its claws continue to reach for you even as the life drains from it. You don't move, continuing to hold it pinned against the wall until it finally stops moving, then let it slump to the ground.
For a moment, you think something has hit you, as you can only hear a pounding in your ears, but then realize it's your own heartbeat, only now starting to slow down. Both the man and the girl are staring at you in astonishment, and you begin to feel a little self conscious.
After a few moments, the scene settles down and the man stands, picking the girl up and cradling her more than she seems to care for. He reaches for the spear but the girl states something that makes him stop. He starts to argue, thinks better of it, then walks past you deeper into the tunnels. The girl gestures for you to follow.
You hesitate for a bit, looking down at the lizard you just killed, wondering if there might be any more. Then again, if there are, those two will need your help. Holding the spear, you walk quickly after them as they descend deeper into the cave.
After a half hour's walk, you arrive at a giant stone gate. You start to wonder how they can move it, but as it slides out of the way, you see it rolling on lots of small hard rocks that have been ground smooth, like marbles. Beyond the gates is a small town carved out of the sidewalls and the large, stone columns that support the chamber, easily the size of several football fields. The ceiling is sixty to seventy feet up and covered in the luminescent moss and supported primarily by a massive natural stone column at the center.
Ropes woven out of a mossy substance that dangles down from the ceiling provides access to higher chambers, and even a few bridges between larger structures. You can see dozens of people crisscrossing over the ropes, going about their lives, all living in the dimly lit caverns.
The man and girl disappear into the streets while you stare, and you quickly find yourself surrounded by guards. They eye you cautiously and demand that you hand over the spear, which you do without argument, as they all have spears pointed at you. But, a few minutes later, an elderly gentleman arrives who, to your amazement, speaks some Spanish.
Neither of your Spanish speaking is that good, but you're able to surmise that at a young age, he wandered from the cave and was found, and taken to an orphanage, where he stayed for several years and learned Spanish. Everyone assumed he was blind because his eyes could not handle natural sunlight, even the moon was too bright to look at. However, one night a new moon was out and it was dim enough for him to see and sneak away, plus dark enough that others could not chase him in the dark. That's how he found his way back to the cave.
He goes on to explain that the girl you found is nothing short of a princess. Her parents ruled over this city and the others like it, as had previous generations of her family. The parents had been killed during an attack from the lizards, but there is a prophecy of her bringing and end to the Big One, and ending the war for good.
You found her having just survived an attack on her own. Now, according to the translator, she wishes you to stay by her side and help her fight.
You pause, a little taken aback. You came here to wander through what you thought was am empty cave. Now you're being asked to participate in a significant conflict. The guards, who by now have lowered their spears, are all watching you intently. You aren't sure what they're going to do if you say no.
