The contrast between the area around you and the area near the far tunnel entrance is striking. The air around you is quiet, dark, and very still. At the same time, you can clearly hear the echoing cries of the men facing down the hoard of lizards that are pouring into the tunnels. You listen carefully at the gate for signs of anything coming near the gate, and for a moment think you may hear heavy foot falls, but they just as quickly die away.
Over and over you resolve to go down and help, and each time you pause because the soldiers appear to be getting the upper hand, or you might startle the guards as you approach and they might strike out at you, or any other number of reasons you come up with each time to decide not to actually go. Every time it happens, you become more and more certain that you'll not be able to join into the fight, and remind yourself that it really isn't your fight.
Then the Big One appears. It's roar echoes through the chamber and you feel like the stones are rattling under its intensity. The men all begin to cower in fear, and the lizards start to get ahead, pushing the line deeper into the city. The Big One looks around for a few minutes, then charges full bore into the city, knocking aside guards and lizards alike. From where you stand, you can see that it's headed for the Princess.
Forgetting you resolve to stay at the post, you charge into the city, trying to intercept it before it can reach her. There are several channels that lead to the vantage point where she is directing the fight, but she can't see all of them. From where you are, you can see that she's watching the most logical path for it to approach from, but that it's now sneaking low around a different path, hoping to catch her off guard.
The distance is not far, but even sneaking the Big One moves remarkably fast. You close up on it as it near the Princess, but are not quite quick enough. As a last ditch effort, you cry out to her to get her attention away from the empty path she persists in watching. It works, and she looks up just in time to jump clear as the Big One lunges at her.
With one sweep of its claws, it injures or kills the guards who were not quick enough to heed your warning. The Princess now stands alone, grabbing a spear to defend herself. You puff up to one side. The Big One pauses, it's element of surprise lost with now two enemies to face.
