Your task is to design and make an innovative, creative working light. Most consumer products are designed with a limited life span and can be generic in their design. We want to design something amazing and original!
You need to make some decisions about what you need to know. What do you need to think about when designing this light?
What different types of lights are there?
Who will the light be for?
Where will it be used?
What discarded product/items could be used to create a light?
What materials should you be looking for?
Task: Create a mind-map about this design project. (5 marks)
You can complete this on an A3 sheet of paper or using an online tool such as Buble.us or Spicynodes.
(Take a scan to upload if you are completing this by hand.)

Product Analysis: (5 marks)
In small groups, disassemble the light provided for you. Most product are designed for disassembly. This means that they can be repaired and then put back together. You will need to reassemble the light so make sure you pay attention and that you do not loose any components.
Task:
Disassemble
Take photos.
Identify all parts and their purpose
Identify materials used for each part
Reassemble
Collect images of interesting lighting designs, up-cycled projects or indeed up-cycled lighting projects!

Up cycled skateboard with the wheels replaced by light bulbs
Hanging from the ceiling. Suitable for a teenage bed room or 'man cave'.
4 'energy saver' bulbs would be very bright and might be suitable a good sized room.
The shape of the bulbs matched the shape of the wheels so does not not out of place. In this way, the board has kept its original form.
Plywood board which is easy to work with.
4 light fittings. Electrical cable.
If thrown into land fill, toxins from the glue, paint etc would leach into the environment. The plywood itself would decompose over time, but would take many years.
Task: Design Brief (5 marks)
It is now time to write about what you are going to do to solve the problem, use your findings from your research and plan your design brief below, (you should aim to write detailed and comprehensive paragraphs). There are key words below to help. You should describe the context (where, who, why) and the general direction of what you will design. Don't be too specific at this stage.
EXAMPLE
The light I am going to design will be used in my Uncle's 'man-cave'. This is a room in his house that he uses to entertain with his friends. He is a keen surfer and former skater so the light should draw on these themes. The room already has good lighting, so my light needs to only provide a low level of light that would add to the overall look and feel of the room. It will not be the main source of light. Possibly a table lamp or wall mounted light.
Using a skateboard is a really good idea as it provides good materials to work with (plywood) and would also fit the aesthetic of this room. I could consider using an old surfboard, or part of one, but this might be difficult to work with.
Reflection and additional research: (5 marks)
Task: Additional research
Carry out relevant additional research for your project, you should choose 1-2 additional areas of research. You need to decide what you should research into in order to design and make the best possible sound system. Areas you might like to consider:
Materials: What materials will best meet the requirements of this design situation? Hardwood? Softwood? Acrylic? Metals?
Manufacturing processes. What tools and equipment will you need? How do you use them safely? If you are considering 3D printing? Using the wood lathe?
Lighting components: What different types LED lighting can we use? What is an LED? What different types of switches could you use?
Design: Further investigation into design factors. Elements and principles of design.
Reflect upon the effectiveness of your research after you have completed the design and producing stages. Was it all relevant?
Should you have investigated into other areas
