Task 1: (5 marks)
Re-write the task in your own words What are you being asked to do and why?
Investigate the target market or situation.
Client needs. (Interview the intended client to determine what they need/want)
Environment (Research of where the clock will be located, photos of the room, who will use them, where and using what kind of input)
Or
Target Market (If your design was manufactured, who might want to buy it? What shops would sell it? Do you think it would be a successful product? Why?)
Task 2: (5 marks)
Product Analysis
Task: Copy and complete the table below.
Conduct research into existing products for inspiration. 4-5 different designs should be analysed. These could be 'designer' products that are already on the market or DIY clock project ideas from Maker sites such as Instructables. You can take photographs of actual clocks as well.

Ideas I could use
Bright red circle ringed with 2 grey/silver boarders. No numbers.
Wall clock. Suitable for home or office
Bauhaus
Acrylic plastic and perhaps aluminium
Bright colours. I really like the borders and how they are not complete circles. This adds visual interest to the design
Task 3: (5 marks)
Design Movements: You have been asked to design in the style of one of three
design movements. Bauhaus, Memphis or Arts and Crafts. LINK
Write a paragraph to describe each of these along with an image that represents each movement.
Choose one of the design movements that you like and create a mood board.
Task 4: (5 marks)
Reflection and additional research
Task: Additional research
Carry out relevant additional research for your project, you should choose 1-2 additional areas of research. You need to decide what you should research into in order to design and make the best possible sound system. Areas you might like to consider:
Materials: What materials will best meet the requirements of your clock? Hardwood? Softwood? Acrylic? Metals?
Manufacturing processes. What tools and equipment will you need? How do you use them safely? If you are considering 3D printing? Using the wood lathe?
Quartz Movements: What is it and how does a quartz movement actually work?
Design Movements: Further investigation into your chosen design movement. Consider historical impact, influence, significant designers etc.
Reflect upon the effectiveness of your research after you have completed the design and producing stages. Was it all relevant?
Should you have investigated in other areas?
Design Brief:
Task: Write a design brief
It is now time to write about what you are going to do to solve the problem, use your findings from your research and plan your design brief below, (you should aim to write detailed and comprehensive paragraphs).
A good Design Brief might be something like this...
"Teenagers have very busy lives. School, family and social activities mean that being punctual is very important.
I will design and make a wall clock that will be appealing to teenage girls. It will be a modern design and will be suitable for a teenage girl's bedroom. Because the design will appeal to teenage girls, then they will be more likely to look at it, read the time and therefore not be late."
A poor example might be something like this:
" I will make a football clock from plastic and print out pictures of players to use as the numbers."
