Unit 2: Collaborative design (TS2W)
In this unit, students work in teams to design and develop an item in a product range or contribute to the design, planning and production of a group product
Area of Study 1: Designing within a team.
This area of study enables students to apply the product design process collaboratively and individually. Each student works in a design team to design, plan and produce a group product. Individual roles and responsibilities are allocated.
Outcome 1: On completion of this unit the student should be able to design and plan a product or range of products collaboratively in response to a design brief.
Area of Study 2: Producing and evaluating within a team.
In this area of study, students apply knowledge, skills, techniques and processes, including risk management, to make their product, designed in Area of Study 1, in accordance with the team requirements.
Outcome 2: On completion of this unit the student should be able to justify, manage and use appropriate production processes to make a product safely and evaluate individually and as a member of a team, the processes and materials used and the suitability of their product.
Assessment
Completion of a group design folio that follows the product design process along with the completed product. Additional formative assessments will be complete throughout Unit 2.
Area of Study 1: Designing within a team.
In teams, you will be asked to design a solution to a specific problem somewhere in the school. it could be a piece of furniture, a teaching aid or a storage solution. There are many, many opportunities for you to design a solution and to make a difference to people within our community. You are most certainly free to find this problem yourself, but it will need to be cleared with your teacher.
Please download a copy of the 'Collaborative Folio Requirements & assessment.doc' at the bottom of the page.
This will outline the group and individual requirements and the marks allocated.
Investigating & Defining
1. Identify a client, user, need, problem or opportunity.
The team investigates and identifies the need, problem or opportunity that will provide the design context.
2. Develop a Design Brief.
As a team, you should write your design brief. For this task, there should be a focus upon Human centred design, sustainability and the visual, tactile & aesthetic considerations.
This outlines the context for the design along with the constraints and considerations.
3. Evaluation Criteria
As in all design projects, a well thought out success criteria is crucial. This is a check list by which you can make judgements about the appropriateness of your design options and you will use it as an evaluation tool for your completed solution.
Create a table of constraints and considerations and be sure to include how you could test these.
4. Additional Research.
The team works together to identify and allocate relevant areas to be researched. Research should include:
Product Design factors
As in unit 1, you will need to study and then refer to the Product Design factors. In particular:

Additional relevant research into the properties of materials, manufacturing processes, safety considerations would be expected but these would differ for each team and the particular design context that is relevant to them.
