Design Context: (5 marks)
Task: Investigate the target market or situation.
You should have some idea of what kind of speaker you hope to make. Write a description of who these speakers might be best suited for, how and where they would be used.
Client needs. (Interview the intended client to determine what they need/want)
Environment (research of where the speaker will be located, photos of the room, who will use them, where and using what kind of input)
Or
Target Market (If your design was manufactured, who might it want to buy it? What shops would sell it? Do you think it would be a successful product? Why?)
Product Analysis
TASK: Copy and complete the table below.
Conduct research into existing products for inspiration. 4-5 different designs should be analysed. These could be 'designer' products that are already on the market or DIY speaker ideas from maker sites such as Instructables.

Ideas I could use
Ball-shaped covered in small plastic squares. LEDs light it up. Disco ball.
Sits on a desk or shelf. Perhaps for a youth market or people who like electronic music
Computer or MP3 player speaker. Portable
Hollow sphere of some kind with plastic squares glued on. The material should be dense. Are the LEDs sqr as well or mounted on the side?
LEDs that light up!
Task: Answer the following questions about speaker design.
1.How can you design your speakers to sound better?
Consider:
Acoustics
Bass reflex
Choice of materials
2. What are tweeters, mid-range and woofers?
3. What is a crossover?
4. What does resonance mean and how is it relevant?
5.
Design Brief: (5 marks)
Task: Write a design brief
It is now time to write about what you are going to do to solve the problem, use your findings from your research and plan your design brief below, (you should aim to write detailed and comprehensive paragraphs).
EXAMPLE:
After completing my research I have decided to design a pair of desktop speakers for my Uncle to use in his office. My Uncle owns a Drummond Golf franchise and therefore the speakers should have a golfing theme. I interviewed my Uncle and he would mainly use the speakers when talking with clients via Skype or just be listening to music while he is working. The speakers will need to work in conjunction with his computer, will need to look good on his desk, and not take up too much room. I will need to keep the cables as short as possible so as not to get in the way when he is working.
