At the Level:
Dragster Analysis.
Write a paragraph that explains the task that you will undertake.
What is the design task ahead of you?
What are the constraints (rules) for these cars?
Why are you being asked to undertake this challenge?
What do you hope to learn from this challenge?
What systems are being used?
Read through the "2014 CO2 DRAGSTER RULES & REGULATIONS" (attached at the bottom of the page) copy and complete the following table:
CO2 Dragster Specifications
Find 3-5 images of other CO2 Dragsters.
Explain their design and highlight any good ideas you might use in your design. Do you think they would be fast? Why?
Photo
Description
Ideas I might use
Pointed nose!
Very pointed front for aerodynamics.
Thin wheels.
Compact 'engine' compartment
Looks small and light and with such a pointed nose it should be fast! Plus its red....
So what have your discovered?
Write a 2 paragraph conclusion.

Above the Level:
Systems Research
There is a system here. A system is a collection of independent components that work together to achieve something. All transportation vehicles work using a system that is comprised of drive-train, steering & brakes, electrical, and the chassis & suspension subsystems. Each of these subsystems is a system unto itself, but combined they make up and vehicle. Think about it...this holds true for a bulldozer and a Ferrari....and, for the most part, the CO2 dragster.
As with everything in the physical world...physics tries to make sense of it.
Explain the following terms (use images whenever possible) and describe how these physics concepts are relevant to this design challenge. (See links on the right of the page for help)

Well Above the Level:
Conclusion
Well so what? You have found out all this information about CO2 Dragsters, now what will you do with it? Now it is time to draw some conclusions and to demonstrate your understanding of this task.
Explain what have you learnt about Newton's Laws, aerodynamics, Friction, Drag etc
Evaluate the usefulness of the above research...was any of it any good?
Identify and conduct additional research that may help you design and manufacture the fastest CO2 dragster.
Perhaps consider:
Deeper understanding of the physics and/or systems involved.
Detailed research into production techniques that could improve performance.
Testing that could be carried out to improve performance.
Consult with your teacher and explore the links provided to decide of areas of research.
