Most of the deposits of thorium of Brazil are concentrated in two areas that correspond globally to areas with the highest concentration of uranium: to the Center, in the State of Minas Gerais and Bahia, and North-East in the States of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba. In these areas the Thorium mineral is found in pegmatites and alluvium. Particular importance from the economic point of view, are the Monazite coastal sands. These deposits of Monazite extends along the coast from the north-eastern end of State of Rio de Janeiro to the North of the pit of the Dulce river in the State of Espírito Santo. New deposits were located further north. In the State of Bahia has an extension of 40 miles. Thorium tenor of Monazite of these deposits is very variable and can reach in some cases, Bahia for example, a 5-6% ThO2.
