The Sing

One of my favorite memories is the yearly Sing and the planning and shopping for the right dress (and getting a date) that went on in the months before. I remember congregating at Madeline Tarnofsky's (our sing leader) to rehearse our three part harmony songs (We're Singing) and practice for the big night.

I still have the program books and even the favors we were given.  My favorite ad read: "Don't be hokey, don't be pokey, ship Chicago's dirt to Skokie."  When I embarked for college at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, I couldn't share that with anyone as half of my sorority was from Skokie and I didn't want to cast any aspersions.  What talent we had - and as I recall in particular, Madeline Tarnofsky was many times our lead.
