When you think of the grass family (Poaceae), you probably picture rolling prairies and savannas, or maybe acres of corn! But, did you know that there are hundreds of species of grasses that occur in forests and woodlands worldwide? Even in Wisconsin, there are approximately 40 species of grasses that grow mainly or exclusively in forested habitats. John Zaborsky (UW Madison, Botany Dept.) will lead a workshop on the forest grasses of Wisconsin. Attendees are encouraged to bring specimens of forest grasses they have collected and wish to identify.
