Dr. John Thomson, known as "Dean of North American Lichenology", was a professor of botany at UW-Madison for four decades. In 1968 he founded the Botanical Club of Wisconsin. To honor his memory, the John Thomson Research Award was established to encourage student research on Wisconsin's non-cultivated plants. Each year BCW presents the award to an undergraduate and graduate student from a Wisconsin college or university. At our next meeting, Jeff Rose, the 2014 graduate award winner and Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Botany, will present a talk about his research—Morphological evolution at multiple taxonomic scales in the phlox family. In addition, Maegan Gagne, the 2015 award winner, will discuss her research—Temperature-related decline in boreal trees of northern Wisconsin.
