December 13 - Floristic Research in the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway

Please join the Botanical Club of Wisconsin on Tuesday December 13th for the following presentation by Dr. Michael Nee: Floristic Research in the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway. Dr. Michael Nee, Emeritus Associate Curator of the New York Botanical Garden and Richland Center native, will present his ongoing research on the flora of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway. Although Dr. Nee has spent several decades studying the plants of tropical America, including Veracruz, Mexico, and Bolivia, he has a deep interest in the vegetation of southern Wisconsin and is a prolific collector and documenter of the flora.

Dr. Nee will discuss the nuts and bolts of conducting a floristic inventory of an area including:

  • What criteria go into delimiting an area for floristic research.

  • Time with "boots on the ground".

  • Time in the herbarium.

  • Time on the internet.

  • Problem taxonomic groups.

  • Time depth and evaluating floristic changes.

Where: Room 158, Birge Hall, UW Madison Campus.

When: December 13, 2016. 6:30-8:00 pm.
