What is Animation?
Animation has been around in some form since the beginning of time. Early Egyptian drawings often depict figures in various poses showing movement from one image to the next.
Animation is creating the illusion of movement using still images.
An early animation device, the phenakistoscope was a disk that was spun like a pinwheel. The illusion of movement was achieved when a viewer stared at the spinning disk.
Techniques Used in Animation
Hand drawn animations are still popular today. Twenty-four pictures are needed for every one second of film. Some animators use onionskin to help create accurate movement between one picture and the next. By using their knowledge and skills with creative purpose, animators are capable of producing great works through the arts.
Stop Motion animation involves the use of puppets, clay figures, or other objects that are photographed and then moved slightly and rephotographed. Slight movements make for smoother animations.
Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) is where three-dimensional images are created and digitally manipulated on a computer. This involves the animator creating the frame of the character and then adding life to it through the process of rendering.
