Take Your (whole) Map System with You, or have Your Raspberry Pi, and Map with It Too
Bio: James has been captivated by understanding how things work since childhood. This developed into an interest in computers. Free (and open source) software allowed him to learn how these fascinating machines work and also provided a similarly minded community of people who were excited about computers and liked sharing what they had learned and created. A few degrees and a couple of jobs later, he is giving a workshop at this very conference about setting up GeoMoose, an open source web mapping project he helped start almost ten years ago.
Take Your (whole) Map System with You, or have Your Raspberry Pi, and Map with It Too
Every once in while a project comes along that's both useful and at the same time fun to put together. The need: to see a online mapping system interface on multiple devices in the field no matter the connectivity level, even in a standalone mode, completely self contained. Join us as we describe our efforts at building a Mapping interface that can run completely self contained on the second generation Raspberry Pi (RPi2), a sub $40 computer. Topic covered: Hardware, which model RPi and why, Open Source software stack used and why, capabilities of the system, Some thoughts about the future, networking, and a demo.of a working model.
