Bio: Dan is the Executive Director of the PMO for AGSI, Canada’s premier geospatial software, data, and professional services provider. Dan entered the GIS field with a background in Survey and Drafting. He managed GIS departments and projects during his tenure with TELUS Communications and TELUS Geomatics. Dan is a Past President of the Geospatial Information Technology Association (GITA), a past president of British Columbia’s Integrated Cadastral Information (ICI) Society, and a member of NAIT's Geomatics Advisory Committee.

We know our GIS implementations have to be more than wallflowers standing alone in a corner by themselves. But in many cases introductions to other systems have been awkward; the interactions forced, and stinted. Frankly, much of the time our role as matchmaker has amounted to passing notes back and forth between the parties. They're just not hitting it off. / To succeed in the future GIS has to get out from playing a back-office role and and start rubbing elbows with the popular apps. / While innovative spatial applications abound in the consumer and business arenas, GIS implementations supporting back office have been mostly keeping to themselves. / Let's discuss what we can do to get our existing GIS ready for a more active social life.
