PhD in Medical Education

This programme is for staff and healthcare professionals who wish to further their career by undertaking independent high-quality research in medical education. It is ideal for those who are seeking leadership positions.

Overview

Multidisciplinary staff members from a variety of backgrounds (education, social science, psychology, medical ethics, as well as clinical specialties) contribute to wide-ranging educational research activities at the Academic Unit of Medical Education at Sheffield Medical School.

Educational research is important for continuing to develop the field of medical education and to inform all aspect of our health-related professional practice. We are also dedicated to contributing to the wider education community by sharing our research findings and involving key stakeholders in our educational research.

Training and support

Doctoral students receive direct support from at least two academic supervisors during their studies, and a dedicated thesis committee provides guidance throughout the programme of research.

Research training is tailored to each doctoral student. Development opportunities include an extensive programme of university PhD training workshops, support from mentors and journal clubs and ‘Medical Education Seminars’ events for presentation of completed research and work-in-progress.
