Mentoring for Learning and Teaching

What is it?

Mentoring is a partnership between a mentee and mentor, which supports learning and experimentation and helps individuals develop their potential.

Our Mentoring for Learning and Teaching Programme is centred around positive conversations that helps mentees to create a clear development plan that enables them to achieve what's expected of them in their role and guide their career development. Our goal is to facilitate connections between teaching staff within the Medical School and across departments in the Faculty to provide Mentoring support.

What are the benefits?

Mentoring is beneficial for the professional development of both the mentee and mentor. As a mentee you can get advice and support on your teaching practice, learn from the experience of others, and explore areas that are key to a successful career in education. As a mentor you can develop your leadership and management skills and gain recognition for your mentoring role. This process can also be used as evidence towards professional recognition from the Academy of Medical Educators.

How does it work?

  1. Attend the training to explore the requirements of a ‘successful’ mentoring partnership and participants can decide if they wish to participate in the programme.

  2. Complete a Profile form to tell us your details and what you would like to gain from the programme.

  3. Matching process will pair mentors and mentees.

  4. New pairs have a first meeting to discuss the purpose of the mentoring and ways of working together. Pairs will complete Mentoring Agreement.

  5. Conduct mentoring meetings over a period of time. Format and duration to be agreed by pairs.

  6. Once the objectives are achieved and reached an end you can either exit the programme, decide to set new objectives or choose to be re-matched with a new mentor/ mentee.
