The Year 6 Induction Day at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy is a pivotal event, meticulously designed to smooth the transition for students embarking on their secondary school journey. It serves as a vital bridge between primary and secondary education, aiming to dispel anxieties and ignite enthusiasm for the exciting new chapter ahead.
The overarching goal of the induction day is to foster familiarity and belonging. It introduces students to the school environment, helping them navigate the larger, more complex campus, from classrooms to the canteen and sports facilities. Crucially, it familiarises them with the daily routines, timetable, and academic expectations of secondary school, which differ significantly from their primary experience. Beyond logistics, the day is instrumental in building relationships. Students get to meet key staff members, including the Head Teacher, Head of Year, and their crucial Form Tutor, alongside various subject teachers. Perhaps most importantly, it offers a prime opportunity for them to forge new friendships with peers from diverse primary schools, creating their new social network. Academically, the day provides a tantalising taste of different secondary school subjects, offering a glimpse into the engaging lessons and teaching styles they will encounter in Year 7. Finally, it's a vital information-sharing platform, ensuring both students and parents are well-informed about the school's policies, uniform requirements, and comprehensive support systems.
Despite a few moments of anxiety, the day was a great success and all staff at Sir Geoffrey Leigh Academy are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our new year 7s in September.
See you soon!
