Our math class is a place where students learn about themselves as students and individuals while exploring interesting mathematical concepts and ideas. I challenge students to find their 'edge' in mathematics- the place where things are new and exciting but not overwhelming. I encourage the use of hands-on materials and visuals to illustrate thinking. I incorporate seminar-style discussions into math, and enough practice to build confidence and mastery. I prefer students to discover methods that work for and make sense to them, rather than copying a one-size-fits-all method. One student's work on a math problem can look radically different from another student's work- and that's fantastic because each of them is showing how their brain makes sense of the problem or situation. I want my students to trust their own reasoning in mathematics and learn to express that reasoning clearly and boldly.
