Caitlin Podratz: I am currently a first grade teacher at Chisago Lakes Primary School. I completed my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and earned a certificate to teach Elementary Education as well. Along with this, I earned my master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I have always had a love for food and a passion for cooking and baking. As I have gotten older, I have realized how many skills go into planning and preparing a successful meal. I look forward to sharing some of what I have learned with students in this program!
Quinncy Zupko: I am a first grade teacher at Chisago Lakes Primary School. I completed my undergraduate degree at Saint Mary’s University, earning a K-5 Elementary Education License, as well as a math endorsement to teach grades 5-8. Last summer, I finished my Master’s in Teaching and Learning through St. Scholastica. Growing up, I have watched and learned most of my cooking skills from my Grandma Lou! She always encouraged me to try new things and experiment with new recipes. Now that I am living in my own home, I have understood the importance of planning meals ahead of time, shopping at the grocery store with purpose, and continuing to try new things, even if they don’t turn out the first time! I am excited to share my learning with students, and encourage them to use their literature knowledge to enhance their skills in the kitchen!

This past week at Project Seek our students got the chance to try out several new recipes, and visit Redco Food Service on our extended day field trip! We started out the week with half the kids making three different types of eggs and the other half making Orange Julius! Then we took a pause and headed to Redco, to learn from some of the experts in the field! As we returned to the classroom on Thursday, we swapped students so that everyone had the chance to make/try the eggs and Orange Julius.
Wow... what an amazing field trip it was! The staff at Redco was AMAZING! The students had the chance to mix together and try out a variety of different ranch recipes, paired with multiple new vegetables that most had never seen before! Ms. Podratz and I, were overjoyed with how willing the kids were to try new things! After the veggies, we started to learn about where our food comes from, and how it arrives at our lunch tables at school or our kitchen tables at home. The students had a chance to make their very own pizza, paired with strawberry's and juice boxes! Finally, the students learned about the ingredients and machines required to make ice cream, and had the chance to try their own with a variety of toppings to choose from! We are so thankful for the staff at Redco, and the experiences they offered to our students! We wrote thank you notes today, and will be sending them off on Monday!
On Friday, Ms. Podratz's class began by reading "If You Give a Pig a Pancake." The students had the chance to mix up some pancake batter, and learn about how to use a griddle! The students were pouring the batter, flipping the pancakes, and pouring on the syrup... YUM! Ms. Zupko's class continued reading chapters in "The Summer Camp from the Black Lagoon," and had the chance to learn about the differences between a hand/stand mixer and how to use a hand mixer in class. Then, the students helped mix up a yummy fruit dip, cut up strawberries, and add in their apples and graham crackers... YUM!
All of the recipes that we have made in class, as well as the ranch recipes from our field trip will be included in our "Recipe Book," that will be available at Open House or sent home on the last day of class!

We have begun an exciting week getting to know all of our students, practicing fractions, making playdoh, reading stories, and trying out new recipes! Today, Ms. Podratz's group read the book "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," and used a variety of ingredients to make their own tasty meatballs! It was so much fun getting to watch the students use new ingredients, learn how to use air fryers, and try their tasty creations! Ms. Zupko's group started reading, "The Summer Camp from the Black Lagoon," and made some camping trail mix! Students practiced using dry measuring cups and had to figure out what to do when the dry ingredients wouldn't fit perfectly level into the measuring cups. Finally, all of the students worked together to clean up their bowls, utensils, measuring cups, etc., because as we all know.... that's part of cooking! :)

Students should bring a snack and water bottle each day.
Extended Day Plan:
For our extended day (June 18), we will be going to Redco Foodservice Equipment in South Saint Paul. We will be there from approximately 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Students will be provided with lunch that day (tentatively pizza, pasta, and ice cream). We are working to accommodate allergies for this day, but please reach out ASAP so that I can connect with Redco. If your child doesn't like these foods, I would suggest packing them a cold lunch. At this point, we are not in need of any volunteers to come with on the trip.
Please reach out if you have any questions! We look forward to making memorable experiences this summer with your child.
