Open House night was a tremendous success and the last day students helped with cleaning up the room and organizing all their artwork in a portfolio ready to take home. It was a wonderful grand finale these past two days. Have a great Summer everyone!
Today students finished their India Unit. They also set up the art show for tomorrow's open house event. The art looks incredible. We can't wait to see you there. Students at the end of the day were introduced to the country Ukraine. More on Ukraine tomorrow as students wrap up that project featuring petrikyvka.
Today students began their India Unit and learned a bunch about India culture. They also created some Mehndi henna designs and also another work of art that represents their folk art traditions. I will highlight more on their India Unit tomorrow when they wrap up their projects. However, today I am excited to reveal our amazing turnout we had with our worldly paper mache masks!!!!! Very cool! Students were very creative and took this project in many different directions.
Today students began their day tying up their paper mache masks to fit to their face to wear them. Then we started our Japan unit by looking at the culture and how they view respect differently compared to western society. We then created some art inspired by Japanese culture.
Today students began their day decorating their paper mache masks. Then we started our African unit by looking at the country Kenya. We are learning about the cultural aspects of Kenya and how there in present times are a mixture of traditional and contemporary practices within its culture. We looked at some folk paintings that depicted village life in Kenya and then began creating some Kenyan villages of our own thereafter.
June 18th 2024 Today students had quite a busy day! We started out by finishing the form of our paper mache mask projects and applied the last coat of gesso to prime before it's decorative layers of paint and materials. We also created a plan of our intended design for the decoration of our masks. Then we continued to finish working on our Australian Aboriginal rock art projects from yesterday. Then we began the second half of our day watching abstract artists show us some painting techniques and then students had the opportunity to practice some techniques on smaller paper first before working on our large collaborative abstract painting. Students had a blast and really enjoyed themselves. The pictures and video snippets speak louder than words!
Today students began their Australian Aboriginal projects. Students watched a video that showed us Australian culture as we adventured through the outback and got to know a little bit about the Aboriginals in the heart of Australia's outback. They then began to create their rock art, dot paintings, and x-ray paintings that reflect some of Australia's most important historical works of art.
Today students were introduced to their Greenland Inuit art project. It was exciting to see the many different directions the students took for their responsive project after having learned about the Innuits that live in Greenland. For the second part of the day students learned more about masks from around the world in various cultures and then they continued working on building their paper mache masks.
Today students worked to finish up their Rainforest Animal Portraits. Then we began our next project which was to make a paper mache mask. Students applied their first layer of paper mache clay today and will continue again tomorrow to form their mask project. After snack today we started our next country which is Greenland. We started watching a culture video about how the Native Inuit people live on the big ice country Greenland. It has been a tremendous hard work day so unfortunatley I wasn't able to capture any photos for you today but tomorrow is a promise! Tomorrow we will continue the paper mache mask project and while that is drying we will begin our Greenland art projects.
Today students learned about Ecuador and the Sapparro people that live within the dense Amazon Rainforest. We learned about their culture by watching a short video to see how they lived. We learned about the food they ate and their many day to day living practices. Afterwards we began our first art project. Students learned how to create a compositional grid and created a rainforest animal that lives in Ecuador.
Today students introduced themselves as well as myself. We went through classroom procedures, expectations and routines. We had a tour of the building. Artists created a table tent nametag. We had a successful day of preparation. Today we mixed some tertiary colors into our color pallets and we also applied and primed gesso to countless artist papers. We passed out our navy blue Project SEEK 2024 t-shirts. And we just began our first country of exploration, and students chose the country Ecuador. I will review more about Ecuador and it's curricular content tomorrow.

Matt Glowacki: I am currently the K-6 art teacher at Hinckley Elementary. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State University and also additionally did some undergrad work at Anoka Ramsey Community College at the Coon Rapids campus. I enjoy creating art of all sorts, types, and styles. Painting and mixed media are my top favorites. I am a continual learner for life, and I enjoy seeking out new opportunities that my students can learn from. I am deeply inspired by international artists and what motivates them to create their artwork. I dream to travel the world to see its varying visions of what art can be.
Work on-site as a team to make a large scale abstract painting!
