Awesome Alaska

Hello Awesome Alaska Families!  I hope to see all of you tonight at the Open House.  It is from 5-7 pm.  Your child has many projects and information to share with you!  Also, please make sure that your child has a backpack tomorrow to take home all of their projects and materials from "Awesome Alaska!"  Thank you so much and see you soon!  Ms. Schmidt

Good Afternoon Awesome Alaska Families!  Today we finished our Northern Lights paintings, continued to work on our research projects, learned some more about Sled Dogs and the Iditarod, and listened to "The Year of Miss Agnes."  Please ask your child if they need a shoe box for their project and try to find one for him/her to use.  I will also try to locate a few shoe boxes.  Thank you and have a good evening!  Ms. Schmidt

Hello Awesome Alaska Families!  I have not had access to my gmail account on my new laptop since Wednesday morning.  I had a security breach and do not currently have my laptop available.  The past two days students have been working on their paintings of the Northern Lights and planning and researching their topic for their big project.  We will have all of their work on display at the Open House next Wednesday evening from 5-7.  Our virtual field trips went well on Wednesday, despite the technological difficulties prior to their start.  Make sure you ask your child about Marine Mammal Adaptations and what they learned about the "Brown Bears or Grizzles" in Alaska.  Next week we will continue to learn many more facts about Alaska and finish our paintings and our projects.  I hope everyone has a really wonderful weekend!  Thank you, Ms. Schmidt

Today our Awesome Alaska students finished their "Flip Book" of Alaskan Facts, chose a research topic, and learned about Biomes.  We also discussed the weather and climate in Alaska and what our Extended Day will look like tomorrow.  Don't forget to send a cold lunch and water bottle for tomorrow.  Sunscreen might be a good idea as we will eat lunch outside.  Have a really wonderful evening!  Ms. Schmidt

Hello Awesome Alaska Families!  Last Thursday we spent time completing previous class assignments and then started a "Flip Book" all about Alaska.  This coming week we do not have class on Monday, June 19th.  On Tuesday we will finish our Flip Book, talk about our Virtual Field trips that will take place on Wednesday, choose a research topic, and continue learning new things about Alaska!  Wednesday will be our extended day with a virtual field trip with the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward, Alaska and then a field trip with the Alaska Zoo from Anchorage.  Students will need something for snack time and also a cold lunch for a picnic between field trips.  We will finish up our day at 2:30.  Don't forget, we will also have class on Friday, June 23rd this week.  Thank you so much and have a "Happy Father's Day!"  Ms. Schmidt

Good Afternoon Awesome Alaska Families!  Today we reviewed state symbols and facts about Alaska.  We also talked about the Flag of Alaska and each student created their own Alaskan Flag.  We will have a flag contest to see which new flag creation is the favorite.  I read from "The Year of Miss Agnes" and students finished their picture related to the book.  Tomorrow we will finish up on the State Symbols and brainstorm a list of ideas for our research projects.  Have a really wonderful evening!  Ms. Schmidt

Good Evening Families!  Today we discussed the top (2) industries in Alaska and what type of crops are able to grow up there.  Ask your child what the top (2) industries are in Alaska today and how Alaska gets most of their food (answers: Oil and Tourism/most food is imported).  The students also created a picture today that represented something about themselves.  This activity is related to our read aloud "The Year of Miss Agnes."  The student creations will be displayed at our Open House!  I hope everyone has a wonderful evening!  Ms. Schmidt

Hello Awesome Alaska Families!!  We had a great first day of Project SEEK.  We learned about the history of Alaska today and several other important facts.  Students started to look at some books to help them decide on a Research Topic for our class.  We also started our read aloud today called "The Year of Miss Agnes."  Ask your child what facts he/she learned today and what the read aloud is about.  Each student brought home a revised Project SEEK calendar today.  We are unable to have school on Monday, June 19, since it has been declared a State Holiday ~ Juneteenth.  We will instead have school on Friday, June 23rd.  Tomorrow we will learn all about the Alaskan State Symbols, continue our read aloud, and play a few games to build community within our class.  Have a great evening!  Ms. Schmidt

Welcome to Awesome Alaska!

I am so excited to share lots of interesting information with you about one of my favorite places, ALASKA!  We will learn about the ecosystems, state symbols, wildlife, history of the state, Northern Lights, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and much more!  Students will choose a topic related to Alaska to research and then create a project to display for Open House.  We will plan to have one or two virtual field trips with places in Alaska like the Alaskan Zoo and the SeaLife Center in Seward, Alaska.  We will be drawing, painting, reading, writing, researching, and having lots of fun!  See you very soon!
