BrainyActs-
A brainiac is an exceptionally intelligent person.
Our BrainyActs are growing our intelligence, our teamwork skills, and our grit!
Today students learned a little history about the Morse Code. They also learned another substitution cipher called the Keyword Cipher. Lot's of decoding going on today.
Our new game today was Cribbage. I appreciate the students who already knew how to play as they were able to help our beginners. I encourage you to keep playing as the only way to get better at the game is to keep playing. Students will be bringing home a direction sheet for Cribbage on the lsat day of class.
Students became "trapped" in the 8-bit world of Minecraft today. Fortunately, through teamwork, ingenuity and grit, they were all able to escape.
Our new game today was Backgammon. It's a great game; unfortunately, I didn't do the best job of explaining the board set-up, so we didn't get off to the best start. Thankfully we will have another day to get it right!!
Puzzles and Ciphers and Riddles, Oh My! How can the periodic table of elements be used to create a secret message? That is what the students discovered today.
The Team Challenge - Wacky Stacks - required teams to create the tallest structure using anm unrelated assortment of items. I took a picture of each team working, but didn't get a picture of their final creation.
I continue to be amazed at the students grit and willingness to embrace the challenges. Today we did an online puzzle where they worked with a partner to solve several puzzles in order to escape. The hardest part wasn't the puzzles, but the fact that they could not see each other's screens and needed to communicate as each person had different pieces of the puzzle.
The site we visited is called: enchambered.com. They have other puzzles available if you would like to explore. The one we did was called Alone Together which is free. I do recommend parent supervision if your child is visiting this site. Not all components of the site are free.
Extended Day Fun!
Students visited Trapped Puzzle Room in St. Paul. Each group had a mission to accomplish, and I am happy to say they both did it in under 60 minutes! Great team work!
After the Puzzle Room we enjoyed a hot afternoon at Paradise Park in Chisago. After lunch, students enjoyed the playground options, some cookie challenges and balloon tag. I hope your student came home excited to share their adventures.
Today students learned a new type of cipher - a transposition cipher.
Today was also the day we began playing chess. For our beginners, I have a series of mini-games where they can learn how each piece on the chessboard moves. For our students that already know the games, they had an opportunity to play against their peers!
For the team challenge, each team was asked to create the 51st state. They needed to name their state and choose state symbols such as a state bird, state motto, state song, state flower and state flag. Very creative thinkers in this class, which is a great skill to have when solving challenging puzzles.
Today students completed their first full breakout room. The theme was summer road trip! I am happy to report that all the students were able to open their boxes! It was fun to watch them problem solve, work together, and keep trying when something didn't work. This experience gives them a little insight as to what our field trip will be like on Tuesday.
Remember to complete the waiver that was emailed out if you have not already done so and follow the directions in the email.
Today students completed a digital escape room, helping the aliens get their spaceship restarted and back out to outer space!
Game On! Students learned how to play Othello, created in 1971, a variant of a game called Reversi, invented in 1883. Students also had a chance to play Pente which is a variation of one of the oldest board games known, called Go. Go is thought to have originated in China about 2500 years ago.
Today students learned how to navigate a directional lock, a four-digit lock and a key lock. The puzzles were challenging, but they persevered! The students also learned about the Atbash cipher.
Then students were introduced briefly to the game of Pente. Wednesday we will have more time for games.
It was a great first day of getting to know everyone, establish a routine and start figuring out puzzles! Today students learned about PolyMaths, Caesar Ciphers, Lock Boxes and were briefly introduced to the game of Mancala. I look forward to Day 2 and diving in even deeper.
Welcome!
