BRAINY-ACTS - DAYS 12
June 30: It was an awesome last day. Students had to save the pizza from the Pizza Eating Zombies. They put all their new sleuthing skills to work and seized the day. We ended the day with games and clean-up. Our spy disguises arrived a little late, but we still had fun with them!
Parents/Guardians: Thank you so much for sharing your student with me this summer. They are a great group of students. I hope they made some new friends, learned some new things along the way and had fun.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, BrainyActs! Mrs. Blake
Enchambered: Here is the link to the Enchambered website. We weren't able to get through all the brainteacers, ,but I know you and your student will enjoy working through them!
BRAINY-ACTS - DAYS 10 & 11
June 28 & 29: Today students were able to help Agent Loafer solve the mystery of S.O.C.K, restore fun in the world and secure the WC. A lot of hard work was needed to decipher the new secret code using the KEYWORD Cipher.
Teamwork is such an integral component of solving ciphers. Today teams had to create the tallest structure with a variety of items that were in their bag. (a can of soup, straws, a die, a tissue tube, a band-aid and a few sticks).
Yesterday the students learned how to play checkers and Multi. Multi was definitely the favorite of the day.
Today watched Shakespeare's Kids perform their play. It was obvious the students had been working hard. They did a great job for their first performance!
One more day....one more room to Escape....this is will the toughest challenge yet!
BRAINY-ACTS - DAY 9
June 27: Today students solved a new cipher that had them traveling back in time with Galileo, utilizing the Periodic Table of Elements and learning a few Greek words. They also played a game called Order and Chaos, as well as Qwixx and Gobblet. During the Teamwork Challenge, groups needed to create a 51st state, with state tree, bird, flag, etc. Very creative.
We received another message from Agent Sneaker but still haven't quite solved the S.H.O.E. mystery.
BRAINY-ACTS - DAY 8
Extended Day
June 23: Today we traveled to St.Paul to experience a professional escape room at Trapped Puzzle Rooms. One group completed the puzzle for the Wizard's Tower and the other group solved the Video Game Mayhem puzzle. It was a great experience.
Afterwards we traveled to a park to have lunch and play some outdoor games. One group or students learned Kubb, while another group played Bocce Ball. After, some students tried the cookie race, trying to get the cookie from their forehead to their mouth without using their hands.
Interesting facts about Kubb and Bocce Ball:
Gotland — Sweden's largest island — is generally considered the home and origin of the game Kubb. Legend has it that the game dates back to the Vikings and has survived since then on Gotland, but there's really no evidence to support this. (From Kubb World.org)
Bocce Ball: Many people, such as Galileo and DaVinci, played bocce during the Renaissance, seeing its benefits to mind and body. It was also played by emperors, admirals, generals, poets, sculptors and scientists. Bocce was also exported to many countries by Italian migrants, and remains popular with bocce courts and clubs throughout the world. (From: Orderisda.org)
BRAINY-ACTS - DAY 7
June 22: Today students were immersed in the 8-bit world of Minecraft. In order to "escape" they needed to solve the puzzles to open several locks including a directional lock, a word lock and a 4-digit lock.
Prior to starting the puzzle room, students had a variety of smaller brain-teasers to complete to warm up their brains. Puzzles included Logic Links, Noodlers and linked metal brain teasers.
During Game Time, the students who are new to chess finished several mini-games that introduce the moves and names of each chess piece. They were then able to play their first full chess game. Our seasoned chess players learned a strategy called "castling".
BRAINY-ACTS - Day 5 & Day 6
June 20 & 21: Today students took a "secret message" and encoded it using their favorite cipher they learned so far.
Also, students were invited to join the Secret Headquarters of Espionage Academy (S.H.O.E Academy). They recently learned that one of the secret agents is missing and have a mystery to solve.
On Tuesday, students participated in an online puzzle room from Enchambered. They learned the importance of communication as each partner had a different screen with images that related to their partner's screen. Once they were able to see one another's screen, they were able to solve the puzzle much more quickly. (We were working so hard on this, I forgot to take pictures!)
Students who are familiar with the game of chess had an opportunity to play, while those who are new to the game are learning the names and moves of each piece through a variety of mini-games. We ran out of time to finish today, but will finish on Wednesday so that they will be able to play a game.
BRAINY-ACTS - Day 4
Students learned the Transposition Cipher. They are getting really good at decoding secret messages.
Today they were able to put their lock skills and their puzzle solving skills to work to complete a full Breakout Puzzle. Students worked in small groups and had to figure out the combinations to 5 different locks to "break-out" Many of the groups finished with plenty of time to spare.
Our new game for the day was Backgammon. Once we got the boards set up correctly, they were off and running. Another quick game that they learned to play was called Blink. This is a fast action card game where you match shape, quantity or color.
BRAINY-ACTS - Day 3
Today students had an opportunity to complete a digital breakout room. The students did great. It was wonderful to see those that completed it help others, so all were successful!
Students also learned a new cipher today called the Pig-Pen Cipher.
Our new games for the day included Quoridor and Q-Bitz. There are some students in our class who have outstanding visual perception skills!
BRAINY-ACTS - Day 2
Today students learned how to unlock a word lock, a directional lock and a 3-digit lock. They also learned about a new cipher called the Atbash cipher. I am proud of their efforts, perseverance and teamwork!
Today they were also introduced to the game Pente (based off of the game Go - considered to be the oldest board game continuously played to the present day) , and the game Othello.
Brainy-Acts - Day 1
We are off to a great start!! Students learned about famous Polymaths, created Davinci Doodles, decoded a secret message using the Caesar Shift Cipher, solved puzzles to unlock the boxes, and learned how to play Mancala.

I am looking forward to our journey together as we explore a variety of puzzles, games, brain teasers, riddles, and mind-benders. Our 12 days together will be very busy with a variety of fun activities and challenges.
Students are asked to come each day with a positive attitude and a growth mindset!! Some puzzles will be easy and many will be a challenge. With hard work and perseverance you will achieve success. Students also need to be ready to work with others in the classroom. Teamwork and respectfulness will help one another succeed.
There are no supplies that you need to bring. I will be providing a notebook and a pencil for all students.
For our extended day activity, we will be going to an Escape Room. More details will be coming. Students are asked to pay $10.00 to help with the cost of this event.
