Wednesday we walked to town and took a tour of Members Cooperative Credit Union (MCCU). In the words of the students, here is some of what they learned: the difference between a bank and a credit union, the room (in the vault) is surrounded by very thick walls ("super thick metal"), there is a timer on the outside vault door, you get your own place to store stuff (safety deposit boxes), they have a name for the coin counting machine (Edna), you need two keys to open the safety deposit boxes, $1000 in quarters go in a bag from the Edna and they sell them to the Federal Reserve, a credit union is a not for profit business, and the history of MCCU.
As you can see, they learned a lot and I'm sure there is more that could be said. After our tour we stopped at Pizza Pub and each student was responsible for their own bill and figuring out the tip based on the bill. They did a great job and our server was MORE than impressed with this group of young entrepreneurs!
Check out this great program MCCU has for helping our young people begin to save money (and they earn $50, that is deposited into a savings account for them just for completing the online program):
Picture download coming your way from our first day through today.....
They are in the BLACK by almost $100. However, they did have an order for the week that may put them back just a bit. The good news is that this order was for the entire week, so expenses should be low.
They are so excited (though it may be short lived).....they are "in the black" after business today! Today they also made some tough decisions on which product suggestions to move forward with and which products to wipe off the list. Some products will be Open House products only, due to we felt that a few of the products would appeal more to families rather than Project SEEK age students. So, keep an eye out for our items we will be selling at Open House.
It's hard to believe that we have completed the second day of our time together! This group works well together and they have amazing ideas and suggestions every day.
Today the group voted to give 25% of their profits to two different charities (each one will receive 12.5%). The first one is International Elephant Foundation. Check out their website: https://elephantconservation.org/ The second charity is Safe Haven Foster Shoppe. Check out their website: https://safehavenfostershoppe.org/
After two days in business, the group is still in the red ($32.27). They have had a great attitude about their expenses compared to their income, as they know it "takes money to make money."
Hello fellow entrepreneurs!!!
We hope that you are prepared for a fun-filled time at S.E.E.K. this year, as we will be operating the SEEK store as well as developing and selling some of our own product ideas.
Your “homework” assignment for the next couple of weeks, before we see each other on June 12th, is to think of a few ideas that our “business” can develop, market, and sell. While you are thinking of these ideas, please write down the supplies that we would need to make the product and any ideas that you would have for marketing (promoting) the product.
On the first day, please bring the following to class: your idea sheet, a pencil and a spiral notebook to write other ideas in. We will provide you with a binder for our time together, that way we will all stay organized and have our business materials all in one place! Also, as “business owners”, we would like to see a smile and a positive attitude each day!!!
Until June 12th, make the most out of the school time you have left! If you have further questions, please contact us by phone at 651-213-2153 or by e-mail at sspray@isd2144.org .
Sincerely,
Mrs. Spray and Miss Jensen
