Caitlin Podratz: I am currently a third grade teacher, but I also have experience teaching first grade and preschool. I completed my undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and earned a certificate to teach Elementary Education as well. Along with this, I earned my master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. I have always had a love for food and a passion for cooking and baking. As I have gotten older, I have realized how many skills go into planning and preparing a successful meal. I look forward to sharing some of what I have learned with students in this program!

Day 1 Update
Today, we read the story Play Dough On Strike, and students got to make play dough. We also learned about the history of play dough and watched a video of how the Play Doh brand produces their famous product.
Day 3 Update
We have had a fun first week getting to know each other and spending time cooking! Yesterday, we read S Is For S'mores and made trail mix. Today, we read The Couch Potato and made potatoes in the air fryer. In doing so, students were able to learn about how to safely use air fryers as well as knife safety. Students seem to be really enjoying learning new skills in the kitchen and of course, have loved having new foods to try each day.
Day 5 Update
We have kicked off yet another busy week in Recipe for Literature. This week, we have been focusing mainly on griddle skills. Yesterday, students had the opproutnity to make/taste eggs three different ways after reading the story Green Eggs and Ham. Students said the best eggs were the ones they got to make on the griddle (either scrambled or sunny side up). Today, we read If You Give a Pig a Pancake and Mr. Wolf's Pancakes. We then split into groups and made homemade pancakes, as well as box pancakes. Students got to try both kinds of pancakes and vote on their favorites, with the winner being the homemade version.
Field Trip, Anyone?!
We had a fabulous time on our field trip to Redco Foodservice Equipment. On our field trip, students learned how to make icecream using a commercial icecream maker. Students also got to make four different types of ranch to try with a variety of veggies. Finally, students had the opportunity to create their own pizzas that cooked in a commercial pizza oven. While on the trip, we learned about what Redco does and who they market their products to. Students had a great time trying new things and came home stuffed from all the delicious eats.
Week 2 Update
It is hard to believe we are already done with week 2 of SEEK! Today, we read the book Waffle Can't Decide. Students then tried their hand at making waffles. They had the opprotunity to make a classic waffle, a Belgain waffle, or a waffle shaped like Mickey Mouse.
Day 9 Update
Yesterday, we read the story The Secret Pizza Party and made naan flatbread pizzas in the air fryer. It was fun for students to compare this experience to their pizza making adventure at Redco. Today, we read Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast. Students then got to try their hand at making french toast. A few students commented that "this [was] the best french toast ever!"
Fruit Salsa Fun
Today in class, we read the story Fruit Bowl. To go along with this, we made cinnamon tortilla chips and fruit salsa. Both items were a huge hit among the students! Many children mentioned wanted to make this at home. Here are the recipes for both:
Fruit Salsa:
2 Granny Smith Apples
2 Cups Strawberries
1 Kiwi
2 TBSP Brown Sugar
2 TBSP Strawberry jam
Finely chop the apples, strawberries, and kiwi. Add brown sugar and strawberry jam to the fruit and combine together. Serve with cinnamon tortilla chips.
Cinnamon Tortilla Chips:
Tortillas
Cinnamon sugar
Cooking spray
Cut your tortilla into 8 triangles. Place the triangles back together so that they look like a tortilla. Spray the pieces with cooking spray and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture. Flip the tortilla over and repeat the process on the back. Place tortilla chps in the air fryer. Bake at 325 for approximately 12-14 minutes, shaking the basket a few times throughout the cooking process. Allow the chips to cool for a few minutes before enjoying.
