Wire Sculpture

I’m calling this project the lax crab because the spherical body of the crab is based off of a lacrosse ball. The subject is a crab with a body shaped like a lacrosse ball because I like catching crabs and playing lacrosse. I chose to create this specific work because I like crabs and lacrosse so I decided to combine the two and create a weird creature. For materials, I used lots of 18 gauge wire and some 28 gauge wire to create as well as a couple pairs of needle nose pliers and a wire cutter. I used a variety of techniques and methods including: Wire fish hook connections and a bunch of bending and twisting of wires. While creating this work, I paid close attention to how the hook connections were connected so the wires wouldn’t wiggle, and so they looked clean/neat. I did this by connecting each hook connection slowly and making sure that I bent each hook completely around so that is locked onto the wire it was closed on. I wanted my sculpture to look smooth and clean and I did that by taking my time with the hook connections and the way/direction the wires were bent. To add interest to my composition, I used some 28 gauge wire to hold a bunch of the 18 gauge wire up and together in different places so it would look better and cleaner, also so it stays more stable. I like the way that the sculpture came out and I like how smooth and perfect it looks/is. However, I struggled with making the circle neat and perfectly spherical. If I created another work like this I would add feet to the crab and make the legs thicker. My work shows that I learned how to make a sculpture out of wire and make it clean and easy to interpret the silliness of the item.
