Sgraffito Clay Tile

This creation is based off of the rim of a 2017 Ford Explorer undercover police cruiser. I wanted to do something related to vehicles and police so I made this. I started by forming a clay circle, then over the period of 3-6 days the clay dried. Once the clay dried, I covered it in a black ink like material that made it so I could scratch off and make a drawing by scratching the clay. Once I finished scratching the drawing out, I covered it in a clear coat then it was cooked in the kiln. I chose to create this because I was thinking about law enforcement things at the time and a vehicle the police drive popped in my head and so I figured I would just make the rims/tires of the undercover cruiser. In this pieces, I used the art of reduction to create an image. I scratched the clay and made the white spots by scratching away the black, and once finished created the shape of the middle of the rim. At first I only had the big holes in the rim that would lead to the inner workings of the tire, but then I decided I would add the hubcap and the bolts on the hub cap as well as some add on cut lines from the hub cap to the bigger holes. I want to become a first responder, either EMS, FD, or PD. I like the Ford Explorers Cruiser rims and so I figured, why not make it. As stated above, I have wanted to become a first responder and I like the law, also I like trucks and fancy tires so when I thought of doing this I just went for it. I could definitely have just made up some designs or patterns to add on to the rim, to make it more interesting.
