Phonics is how we help children crack the code of reading and writing—and we make it fun, interactive, and engaging!
In Nursery, phonics begins with Phase 1, which is all about listening skills. Children learn to tune into sounds in their environment, explore rhyme and rhythm, and play games that help them hear and say different sounds. This is the foundation for all future phonics learning.
In Reception, we teach daily phonics using a systematic and structured approach. Children learn the letters and sounds (graphemes and phonemes), practise blending sounds to read words, and segment sounds to help with spelling. We use songs, actions, games, and lots of practice with real books to help children become confident readers and writers.
By the end of Reception, children will:
Know many of the sounds in Phase 2 to Phase 4;
Blend sounds to read simple words and sentences;
Segment sounds to spell simple words and begin writing sentences independently.
