NEWS: Parent Evening Week 9th March
At Lathom Park Primary School, our music curriculum aims to provide all children with the opportunity to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music from a wide range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. We intend to nurture a love of music by exposing pupils to diverse cultures and musical backgrounds, preparing them for life in modern British society. Through singing, composing and performing—both individually and as part of a group—children develop confidence, creativity and self-discipline. We also aim to develop pupils’ understanding of musical notation and how music is constructed, enabling them to appreciate music as a powerful and unique form of communication.
Our music curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6. Pupils are taught to use their voices expressively, play tuned and untuned instruments, and compose their own pieces using a range of musical elements such as pitch, rhythm and tempo. Listening and appraisal activities allow children to explore music from different cultures and historical contexts, developing their understanding of structure and notation over time. Opportunities for performance—both in class and in wider school events—ensure that music remains an engaging and celebrated part of school life.
As a result, pupils at Lathom Park Primary School develop confidence in performing and discussing music, demonstrating growing technical skill and musical understanding. They are able to recognise basic notation, describe how music is structured and evaluate performances thoughtfully. Children show enthusiasm and respect for music from different cultures and traditions, reflecting an appreciation of diversity.
