NEWS: Parent Evening Week 9th March
While formal language lessons begin in Key Stage 2, we still explore different languages in Early Years in fun and meaningful ways.
We learn simple greetings in other languages like French and Spanish—children love answering the register with a cheerful “Bonjour!” or “Hola!” We also explore the different languages spoken by families in our school community, helping children understand that the world is full of diverse voices and cultures.
At Lathom Park Primary School, our Modern Foreign Language curriculum aims to spark children’s interest in other languages and develop their linguistic competence. We intend to nurture confident and enthusiastic learners who enjoy speaking, listening and writing in a foreign language from an early age. Through engagement, discussion and questioning, pupils develop accuracy in pronunciation and intonation while building a foundation for effective communication. The curriculum also encourages curiosity about different cultures, helping children explore similarities and differences between themselves and others.
Spanish is taught progressively from EYFS to Year 6, with lessons designed to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Pupils engage in interactive activities, games, role-play and conversation practice to consolidate their learning. Cultural knowledge is embedded within lessons, giving pupils context and understanding of the countries where Spanish is spoken. Teachers provide regular opportunities to review and reinforce language skills, ensuring steady progression and confidence in using Spanish across a range of situations.
As a result, pupils at Lathom Park Primary School develop confidence and competence in communicating in Spanish. They are able to understand and use familiar vocabulary, ask and answer questions, and express ideas in both spoken and written form. Children gain an appreciation of cultural diversity and demonstrate curiosity about other countries and languages. Through this curriculum, pupils leave primary school with a strong foundation in Spanish, ready for further language study and inspired to continue exploring modern foreign languages throughout their lives.
