NEWS: Parent Evening Week 9th March
At Lathom Park Primary School, we aim to inspire all pupils with a curiosity and interest in the past and to think and act like historians. We strive to nurture a lifelong fascination with history while helping children understand the importance of knowing and learning from our past. Our curriculum is designed to develop a secure understanding of chronology and provide in-depth knowledge of Britain’s history alongside significant events and civilisations from the wider world. We encourage pupils to respect and appreciate people, places and events that hold local, national and international significance.
Our history curriculum is carefully sequenced to build chronological understanding and historical knowledge progressively from EYFS to Year 6. Pupils are given opportunities to investigate the past through a range of primary and secondary sources, learning to question, interpret and evaluate their reliability. We make meaningful use of our local heritage, including the area’s mining history, the Civil War siege at Lathom House and the development of the local new town, enabling children to connect national history to their own community. Through enquiry-based learning, discussion and debate, pupils develop critical thinking skills and an understanding of cause and consequence, similarity and difference, and historical significance.
As a result, pupils at Lathom Park Primary School develop a secure and coherent understanding of the past and how it has shaped the present. They are able to place events within a clear chronological framework and confidently discuss historical concepts and themes. Children demonstrate the ability to analyse sources thoughtfully and form balanced judgements about reliability and significance. Through history, pupils leave primary school with curiosity, respect and a deeper understanding of the people and events that have shaped their world.
