Brigantia was the sixth province to have joined the Empire, and one of two to be governed wholly by the Imperial military rather than a citizen authority. Mercenary contracts signed with the various powers in the region and several conflicts against resistant nobles brought it increasingly into the Imperial fold until it was fully incorporated as a province. Conflicts between the Brigantians and Terrisians still erupt with regularity despite shared Imperial status due to generational grudges and a shared history of cross-border raids predating the Empire’s presence. As a result legionaries are often deployed to the provincial border to quell these conflicts as they erupt, with such a deployment becoming an honored way for new recruits to cut their teeth. Occasionally these punitive deployments spill over into open conflicts with local officials and their household retinues still bristling under Imperial rule. Because of the volume of legion deployments to the province, Brigantian fashion has been adopted by legionaries en masse and since spread rapidly through the Empire, with excess fabric and slashing being the main hallmark of its distinctive style.
