This has been in the works since April! I hope you enjoy the answers Ms. Sarah has to offer to us! Also, Ms. Sarah C wrote most of the answers via the microphone // dictation mode.
May 6th, 2022
Update May 9th, 2022: Noah also did an interview on her, go check it out!
Update October 12th, 2023: Ms. Sarah C. has retrieved the role of being a coach at Park West and J117 to help teachers get more advanced.
Hello everybody, today I will be interviewing our teacher, Ms. Sarah Cullen. One thing you might know about her is she won a big apple award, as seen from her bio and on a website. There are many things you should know about her, so let’s dive into our transcript! This is also her first year at Park West, and everyone has already done their part to make her feel welcome.
-BIG APPLE-
Jonathan: What is the big apple thing all about?
Ms. Sarah C: The big apple awards celebrate the best teachers in New York City. Over 7000 teachers are nominated and only 19 teachers win. The award was created to recognize teacher excellence in the city.
Jonathan: What specific objective(s) did you have to do in order to win a big apple award?
Ms. Sarah C: In order to win the award I had to be nominated by someone, I still have no idea who nominated me! I completed an application, many essays, submitted my résumé, and had two interviews. Most importantly I had a classroom observation where evaluators observed me teach. The whole process from nomination to winning took around 5 1/2 months.
-WORK-
Jonathan: How was the experience inside J117?
Ms. Sarah C: I enjoyed working at J1 17. I started working there in 2013 as an inclusion teacher, I loved it. I will always think fondly of J117 as I spent many years as a teacher there. I loved the students and staff.
Jonathan: What made you want to switch from J117 to two different schools?
Ms. Sarah C: I loved working at J1 17. I worked there for three years as an inclusion teacher. I absolutely loved working in inclusion. I then worked down at J 47 in Gramercy for two years. I eventually made my way back to J117 and taught there for another three years as a 611 teacher. I loved my students and all of the staff I worked with but I came to Park West so I could work in a 12 11 classroom setting side of school.
Jonathan: How do you like working at Park West?
Ms. Sarah C: I’d love working at Park West! This has been my favorite year of teaching so far in my nine years with the department of education. The best part of working at Park West as my class, I may be biased but I think I have the best class with students in the school. I came to Park West particularly to work with Miss Allie and to be a 12-11 teacher. I I have not been disappointed by my experience.
Jonathan: When did you become a teacher? What made you want to become a teacher?
Ms. Sarah C: I became a teacher in 2013. I am always worked with students with special needs. In high school I was a special education swim teacher and I absolutely loved it. In college I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do I thought maybe I would become a doctor or a nurse but I eventually came back to teaching my first love. I became a teacher through the New York City teaching fellows program. Many of the teachers at Park West became teachers through this program as well.
Jonathan: Is it ever complicated to get the supplies you need for your weekly cooking/stem activities?
Ms. Sarah C: Sometimes it’s hard to get supplies for cooking in stem but it’s mostly because I don’t plan ahead and I always rush the night before. I am working on and planning ahead and getting supplies early so I don’t forget anything.
Jonathan: Did you create a bunch of other class websites before this one? What made you have the idea of this?
Ms. Sarah C: This is my second class website but it’s by far my most successful. I tried creating a class website last year but it was unsuccessful. I didn't have students who could complete the work independently so the website kind of fell to the wayside. I am so proud of the news crew and particularly of you Jonathan. You have done such an incredible job writing, creating articles and maintaining the website.
-PERSONAL-
Jonathan: Do you have any pets at home?
Ms. Sarah C: I do actually, I have a dog. Her name is Cece. I really love her. She brings so much joy into my life. She just turned two recently.
Jonathan: Do you have any occupations outside of school?
Ms. Sarah C: I do not have any occupations outside of school. I do bussing at the end of the day, I do after school, and I think that’s it.
Jonathan: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Ms. Sarah C: If I could travel anywhere, I would go to Japan, or any other country in Asia.
Jonathan: Would you rather live in a luxurious apartment building or a suburban home?
Ms. Sarah C: I would choose a luxurious apartment building that allows pets.
