Knowledge in Practice - Teaching Good Practice in Distance Learning Environments

Knowledge in Practice - Teaching Good Practice in Distance Learning Environments – Dr Axelle Philippon

Summary

Despite its flexibility and the cost-effective advantage to study at a distance, the success of online programmes has been under threat due to lack of students’ engagement and poor retention rates. However, the long-lasted assumption that it is due to the inherent nature of distance learning education is outdated and misleading. This session will discuss effective solutions to increase engagement and retention rates. Ultimately, it will offer practice-based tips on how to overcome both student-related and programme-related challenges. The focus will be on enhancing pedagogical as well as technological knowledge, with an emphasis on how to support online students more effectively by maintaining contact, discipline, and creating online communities. The importance of Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) as well as other technological tools is considered in the context of sharing best practice in online education.
