Moodle – Book

What does the Book resource do?

The Moodle Book resource offers a simple way for you to create multi-page resources in a book-like format within your site. A book is complete with chapters and subchapters, which are neatly bound together with their own table of contents and navigation system. It can also include images, video and audio.

Follow the steps below to create a book resource in Moodle.

Adding a book

Step 1

Before you can make any changes to your Moodle site content, you must first enable editing. To do this, click on the 'Edit mode' button located at the top right of the page.

Step 5

Your book has now been created. You should automatically be taken to the "Add a new Chapter" page to start populating the first chapter of the book. If not, just click the book title. It's worth noting that pages in the book are referred to as 'chapters' in Moodle books.

Create your first chapter - you have a wide range of tools in the text box to embed a range of media and text. When you are finished, click on 'Save changes'.

Step 5

You should now see the first chapter of your book. To add additional chapters and/or subchapters, click on the plus icon (+), within the 'Table of contents' block on the right.

Adding chapters / sub-chapters will take you back to the 'Add a new chapter' page. As before, you must enter the Chapter title and Content for this page.

If you want to make a subchapter rather than a new chapter, check the Subchapter box underneath the Chapter title. Click Save changes when you are done.

NOTE - If you do not see the block on the right to add new chapters / sub-chapters - click the "Open block drawer" to see it.

Step 6

You should now see your new chapter alongside your original chapter.

The arrow icons allow you to change the order of chapters and/or sub-chapters. To edit any of the chapters, click on the cog icon next to the respective chapter. The trash can will delete the chapter and the eye will hide this chapter from student view.

Step 7

Continue to edit your book, adding additional chapters / sub chapters. You can always hide this from students by clocking on the eye on the main Moodle page, allowing you to edit in multiple sessions. When you are finished each time, click on 'Save changes' button to keep your book updated.
