Moodle – Messaging

What does Messaging do?

Moodle has facilities to allow both individual and group instant messaging directly in the interface. Messages can be sent to an individual user, a selection of users or a group inside a module. The ability to send a message can be found in many places throughout the interface of Moodle. When users are sent a message they will be notified immediately through an email, a notification on the Moodle Mobile app or through the Moodle interface.

It is worth noting, that not all users will have the app and not all will have set their preferences to allow email notifications, but all will see the following notification badge at the top of their Moodle pages.

Messaging Groups of Students in Modules

Step 1

For lecturers, the best way to send messages to students is through the module participants list

Simply, navigate to a module or course site and click "More" then select "Participants" in the dropdown menu.

Step 2

Once on the participants screen, check the boxes next to all the students you want to message (or click "Select all") and choose "Send a message" from the dropdown box at the bottom of the page. If you have a lot of participants, you can also use the "Match" options to filter participants by their role (for example, "Student").
