Blue Spruce

Mrs. Lyons will be reading all 10 of the Blue Spruce books as part of our Live from the Library story time. Check our weekly LLC Newsletter and Tugra Times to see when each book will be read.

  • This year we will be pairing the Blue Spruce books from the Forest of Reading with a selection of books from the First Nations Communities Read list and other anchor texts as we explore the big ideas outlined below.

  • We will be using the Historically Responsive Learning Model from Gholdy Muhammad's book, Cultivating Genius, to frame the learning for our Blue Spruce program.

  • Each book has a designated page with links, activities, maker prompts and more!

While we read the blue spruce books we will be discussing and thinking about the following guiding questions:

IDENTITY: How might reading about others help us better understand ourselves?

SKILLS: I can work to create a plan to use my learning to help others. I can use my voice (e.g. writing, videos, artwork, etc) to share my ideas about my plan.

INTELLECT: How might reading about people who are different than us help us to better understand the connections between us? I can make connections between the stories I read and other people in my community.

CRITICALITY: How will we extend our learning into action? More specifically, how might we use this learning to take action to make our world a better place for all of its citizens?

JOY: I can explain what I like about the stories we share together.

text types

We be exploring these text types over the course of our program.

Inquiry Pages

Each book will have a page with literacy-based inquiry prompts to help guide educators and their classes in connecting with the books.

NEW in 2022- We will be connecting our Blue Spruce books to a selection of books from the First Nations Community Reads program and other anchor texts.

jamboard

If you are more comfortable using Google Slides with your class than Jamboard then you can save the Jamboard frames as an image and create a Google slide that can be shared with your class.

Please follow the links below to access a variety of Jamboard resources that can be used with your class. Jamboards that are specific to each book can be found on the inquiry pages dedicated to each book.
