Some children may have difficulty in understanding others and in expressing themselves. Others may have difficulty with social interaction, social understanding and lack flexibility in thought and behaviour. They may have difficulties with attention and listening, and any of these weaknesses may mean the child needs some short-term support.
Some children’s learning needs cannot be met by universal whole school or class approaches. These children may have a greater difficulty than their peers with understanding, thinking, communicating, problem solving, retaining information and learning new concepts and skills. These difficulties maybe more general in nature and cover a broad range of areas of learning, or they may be more specific difficulties (e.g. in maths or with literacy).
Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs are a type of special educational needs in which children have may have difficulties in managing their emotions and / or social situations. They often show inappropriate responses and feelings to situations. Children with SEMH will often feel anxious, scared and misunderstood.
