Introducing our Speech, Language and Communication Toolkit. This section of the website includes an introduction video from Orlaith Simons (Specialist SALT), an array of information, advice, strategies and suggested screening tools and interventions to support Attention and Listening, Early Communication, Understanding Language, Social Skills and Interaction. This isn't to replace advice from a SALT, but as a starting point to help identify and support pupils who may have Speech, Language and Communication needs.
Early identification of Speech, Language and Communication Needs can make a huge difference in determining the necessary support, intervention or referral pathway. In this section, we have included:
Online progress checkers that can be used to identify which area of communication a child may be struggling with.
Links to researched based Speech and Language screening tools.
Links to Speech and Language services in different regions.
Links to external courses for further CPD on Speech, Language and Communication Needs.
In 2025, Outwood Primary and Secondary Academies worked collaboratively along with external specialists to consider what an Inclusive Classroom should include when considering the four areas of SEND. Here we summarise the key summary of environment considerations, physical resources and staff approaches / strategies that are useful for all pupils but especially helpful for pupils with Communication & Interaction difficulties.
Using Widgit, we have created a comprehensive folder of ready made visual resources that can be used to support communication skills. When we use visual support at the same time as talking, we give children extra time to understand, prepare for change, and think about how to respond. Visual supports can support whole classes to understand a routine (eg. Visual timetable) or help individuals communicate – for example, children can point at which snack they want to eat from a choice of two.
Speech and Language interventions are crucial for children's development, from communicating their basic needs, achieving academically, social interactions and supporting their overall well-being. Orlaith Simons has provided a summary of effective Speech, Language and Communication interventions that have been used at different Outwood Primary Academies.
