If Mojo, our main mobility van, is out of service for the night then Motor Pool will lend us our old mobility van, Mobo, for the time being. The mechanism of using Mobo is different than Mojo, so make sure to read and watch the videos carefully.
Step 1: Park the Van
Pull the van into a safe and flat location for your wheel chair rider. Make sure to put the vehicle into park. You don't need to turn the engine off. After doing so, you will notice a red light will appear near the center console of the status of the chair lift. All three lights are needed to operate the lift chair.
Step 2: Emergency Break
After putting the van into park, push down the emergency break. This will light up the second red light on the center console. To release the emergency break simply pull the tab (above the E-break) towards you.
Step 3: Open Back Doors
Go to the back of the van and open the two rear doors. Make sure to fully open the doors to ensure the lift can operated freely. This will also turn on the third green light in the center console.
Step 4: Turn the Lift on
On the bottom left-hand corner, near the edge of car floor, turn the chair lift on. This should turn the lights on the remote.
Step 5: Unfold
Once the lift is powered on, take the remote (should be above the power switch) and press and hold the "Unfold" button until the lift is completely unfolded. The lift might beep back at you if the unfolding process is blocked.
If the lift does not initially go down, press the button to fold it all the way up first. This process typically resets it and allows proper function.
Step 6: Down
After unfolding the lift, press and hold the "Down" button until the lift touches the ground and the guard rails unfold for the wheel chair rider to roll on.
Step 7: Up
Once the rider is on the lift, press and hold the "Up" button until they are fully up. The opposite guard rail will open up and allow the rider to enter the vehicle.
Step 8: Fold
Once the rider is situated in side, press and hold the "Fold" button until the ramp is fully inside.
Step 9: Secure the rider
Once the lift is folded back and the rider is situated inside, make sure to hook and secure the chair user much like in Mojo. The hooks will already be secured in MOBO, and all that is necessary is to pull the hooks and attach them to the chair.
Step 10: Ask rider if they feel safe
Once the hooks are secured on the chair, make sure to get a verbal confirmation that the rider feels secure in the van.
Mobo is an older van that sometimes experiences mechanical difficulties. One of the most common malfunctions is the lift getting stuck mid-air. Follow the steps below to use the manual jack. Video tutorial located at the bottom of the page.
Step 1: Passenger Reassurance
Explain to the rider that the lift has momentarily stopped and that you will have to raise/lower them manually
Step 2: Locate Black Box
Enter the van from the passenger side and locate the black box where the mechanical housing is stored.
Step 3: Unscrew Wing Bolt
On top of the box you will find a wing bolt, unscrew this to open up the housing.
Step 4: Pull Backing Off
This can be difficult, but pulling it up and then away is the best method. The backing will not come totally off.
Step 5: Locate the Metal Bar
Inside the black box you will find a metal bar with a yellow handle stored in the forward cylindrical compartment. Reach into the box and pull it out.
Step 6: Locate the Metal Ring
This is where the metal bar will be inserted to create a manual jack lift.
Step 7: Insert the Metal Bar into the Metal Ring and Begin Lifting the Passenger
The metal bar will easily slide into the ring to create the jack lift. Use an up and down motion to raise/lower the rider into/out of the van.
