Occasionally as a driver or navigator you may come across a passenger showing signs of emotional distress.Â
We are partnering with a new OSU office for situations like this, OSU Assist.
This policy has been created to help deal with these situations.
Step 1: Assess
Try talking to the rider to see how they are doing.
If they express wanting to harm themselves, or you are unable to deescalate the situation, or you are unable to understand what is going on, you can call the Department of Public Safety (DPS) or the Corvallis Police Department (CPD) for assistance.
If they say they are okay and there is no immediate threat to safety, you can continue the ride but would still document the incident.
Step 2: Refer
If the student does not express harm to themselves, ask if they are interested in speaking to an OSU counselor over the phone or calling the national suicide hotline.
CAPS 24-hour Number: (541) 737-2131
National Suicide Hotline: 1-800-273-8255
If they are not sure, they can take a reference card, located in the cup holder at the front of the vehicle.
Step 3: Radio the Leader
As soon as you are able to, radio the Nightly Operations Leader to notify them of what has happened.
Step 4: Incident Report
The last step is either the Driver or the Navigator needs to complete an incident report form. The link is below.
If there are so many details that it would be difficult to write the report on the iPad, report back to the SafeRide office to write the IR on the computer.
