ASOSU SafeRide is required to allow service animals in the vehicles. It is important to ensure that animals entering the vehicles are indeed service animals and not emotional support animals. The following procedure is to assist in determining if an animal is a service animal or not.
We do have the ability to deny service if a service animal is not behaving well in the vehicle (running around, not stop barking, etc.)
If you have a rider that is allergic or scared of the animal, radio the Nightly Operations Leader to determine next steps.
Step 1: Assess
Is a rider trying to bring an animal into the vehicle and is the animal a dog or miniature pony?
If no, we cannot transport that animal. Even if it is an emotional support animal.
If yes, go to Step 2.
Step 2: Ask
**Due to legal implications, it is important to only ask these two questions exactly as written:
Is the animal required because of a disability?
If no, then we cannot transport that animal, even if it is an emotional support animal
If yes, ask questions 2.
What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?
Responses can be tricky as there are many things that count as a task required for a disability.
In general, a trained task is not something the animal does naturally. Example: Saying a dog gives you kisses or cuddles.
However, if they say the dog gives me a cuddle when a panic attack is about to happen, that is different than just cuddles.
As long as the rider responds with something that sounds like a trained task, that is not the natural functions of the animal, we will give them a ride.
If they do not provide a trained task, then we cannot transport that animal.
If you are not sure, radio the Nightly Operations Leader to get their input on how best to proceed.
Step 3: Radio the Leader
As soon as you are able to, radio the Nightly Operations Leader to notify them of what has happened.
Step 4: Incident Report
Only do this step if you had to refuse service or you think the Coordinator should follow up on the behaviors exhibited by the rider
The last step is either the Driver or the Navigator needs to complete an incident report form. The link is below.
If there are so many details that it would be difficult to write the report on the iPad, report back to the SafeRide office to write the IR on the computer.
