Many of our Dragonfly friends noticed that "oi" is in our sight word "vois" !
We have learned many new verbs throughout the year and now putting them into “Je peux…” (I can…) statements. We like to act them out to better remember each verb. Here are a list of some of the more common verbs we have been practicing.
We have completed our Jolly Phonics letter sounds and are now working on sound blends. This week we are focusing on the sound blend “oi”.
We decided to review some of the trickier letters and to do a few letter hunts in our favourite French books. We noticed that the letters “E, R and J” were very easy to find, but it was harder to find the letters “U, Y, V, G and X” as there wasn’t as many of them to find.
We are learning many different strategies we can use in order to add.
As a class we played a game where two are rolled, then that amount of balls is thrown into each crate, then we dump the crate into the final bin after the equals symbol to add them together and write an addition sentence!
We are learning about worms! After finding out that birds hunt for worms to feed their babies we needed to extend our exploration!
We made a worm farm using rocks, sand, soil, water, fruit slices for food and of course, worms!
We have learned so much about worms this week. Did you know that worms breathe through their skin? We also learned that worms cannot see or hear so they use their other senses to get around. We got to see how they create tunnels first hand from observing our work farm.
At the beginning of our inquiry we sat down and brainstormed a list of what we already know about worms, then after reading books and observing our work farm we made new discoveries and extended our list of knowledge. Bravo Dragonflies!
Our "BIG IDEAS" this week in French class:
*My 5 Senses: mes cinq sens
*Stretching out words: count the syllables and stretch the syllables
*Letter Qq: pronounced /keoo/ - said like KEE with rounded lips. We use the same action for C/K, move your fingers like you're clicking castanets together.
*Addition: introduction to addition using numbers 0-10
*Literacy: SK's - sound blending, stretching out words JK's - letter/sound recognition, identifying beginning and ending sounds of a word
Learning through play this week:
ART: clay creations (fine motor strengthening) based on the illustrations from the book "Imagine le ciel", by Barbara Reid
FINE MOTOR & ART: making slime
MATH: addition with feeding the baby birds worms (fine motor strengthening)
MATH: roll the dice, add them together, match the number to the yoga pose and hold that pose!
SMALL WORLD: farm animals at the beach!
LITERACY: spring vocabulary writing
ART: making badges so everyone can be a kindness officer
SENSORY: making slime (exploring the sense of touch)
DRAMATIC PLAY: fire station
We’ve noticed some very bright colours growing in the nature center this week! We used our sense of smell and touch to explore these beautiful flowers.
We have learned that different birds use different materials to make their nests. Some of the materials are: moss, feathers, tree bark, leaves and sticks. Do you see any birds nests in your community?
Baby birds are not strong enough to feed themselves so the mommy bird searches for food and brings it back to feed the babies in the nest. Roll the two dice and add the numbers together to find out how many worms to feed the babies using chopsticks. Great for fine motor strengthening!
We read a very special book called, “Imagine le ciel”, by Barbara Reid. This book is extra special because they use clay to create the animations you see in the story. This inspired us to create our own clay creations or Claymations as the creations come from our imaginations!
We noticed a similarity between firefighters and police officers. We noticed that they both wear badges, so we looked at different types of badges and saw that they have a words and numbers on them and then created our own to wear in the classroom.
Sensory fun at the farm!
Making slime for the class! We noticed that the texture was very: “gooey”, “slimy”, “warm”.
Making community helper puppets, and keeping the classroom safe!
We are learning that addition is very similar to composing, but instead of saying "et" we use an addition symbol "+" and say "plus" and instead of saying "fait" we use an equals symbol "=".
pronounced /keoo/ - said like KEE with rounded lips. We use the same action for C/K, move your fingers like you're clicking castanets together.
We have learned so much about the changes that Spring brings and how the world looks different in the warmer weather in comparison to the colder weather. "Dans le ciel" is a book that uses clay to create the illustrations of all of the different things we can imagine in the sky.
Before reading the storybook, "Imagine le ciel", we looked at the cover and used our starter sentence, "Je vois..." (I see) to discuss what we see. Then, we used the starter sentence, "Je pense..." (I think) to describe what we think the book will be about.
Here is a list we created together of what we might see in the sky.
JK's copied the words and SK's clapped out the syllables, and then stretched out the sounds they heard.

*Literacy: SK's - sound blending, stretching out words JK's - letter/sound recognition, identifying beginning and ending sounds of a word

A community is a place where you live. Community helpers are people who help within that community. We have explored many jobs and the locations and buildings where those people work.
This week, we went to visit a Grade 1 classroom that had created maps of different communities and created a giant 3D model of a community with all of the buildings that we’ve been discussing!
We learned a new song about the 5 senses, but noticed something about our song! One of the 5 senses is missing, can you spot which one is missing?
This week we learned about the sense of smell and what we would be missing out on if we didn’t have our sense of smell.
We brought our senses exploration into nature and explored the different smells we noticed Mother Nature produced. We found different types of mushrooms that looked and felt different, but noticed they had a similar earthy smell. We also noticed that different mosses smelt different.
