We looked at several other books such as the Dr. Seuss book "Ten Apples Up On Top", and we tied in some patterning practice as well.
Rhyming helps students develop phonemic awareness. We read many books with rhymes. We also tied in a sequencing activity with this book.
We made some spooky spiders, and used ten frames to represent how many legs, eyes and beads.
Cute Halloween necklaces
We are learning to read some simple sentences. Every student either has or will have their own book that they can bring home to read to their families. We are practicing using our finger to read each word. We are using the pictures as clues to know what we are reading.
Markers, Stickers and Sparkles! :)
This week we set some time aside to explore outside and learn what we can from nature. We read some books about patterns and then went out and noticed what patterns we saw around us. We saw some patterns in the playground with painted lines, we noticed patterns in the bricks and windows. Then we went near the forest and saw that each tree made the same leaf over and over. We brought our clipboards to record what we noticed.
We also brought some leaves back to class for a sorting activity.
We noticed some interesting mushrooms as well, and made some sketches and observations.
We learned how to take a "spore print" of a mushroom to learn more about it. Each one we examined had different colour spores! Brown, white and even purple!
This week we had some fun counting with acorns.
We matched upper and lower case letters.
We even found some spooky surprises in our sensory bin!
After a long day of play, some of us decided to have a rest in the cafe, with some pumpkin spice lattes! ; )
We are learning that we are all writers! We talked about what that means, and what do writers do? We read a great book called Library Mouse and Bunny Cakes to learn about this.
We finished our week by drawing a portrait of our families, and labeling it with words such as Mom, Dad, sister or other names.
Thanks to Mme Canthal's initiative and passion to share the outdoors with our students, we had a great time learning about our butterflies and watching them grow. The time finally came to say a sad but hopeful goodbye as we watched our class pets fly away!
Some of us decided to pretend we were butterflies and we "flew" to the forest to release our friends.
We took a few minutes to have a class discussion. What will happen when we open the netting? Where will they go? What will they eat?
We're learning to recognize and write our friends' names! We read "Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten" by Joseph Slate, played fish-for-a-name and then we sorted them into what letter the name starts with, incorporating literacy and math.
We read the book "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert, and then found some natural materials to make our own pictures and puppets.
We played "Find the Turkey". Students pick a number where they think the turkey is hiding!
We had some fun making turkey crowns!
After reading "Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes, we looked at the number of letters in our name and represented that number in different ways. We counted with unifix cubes, then wrote the number, and filled out a ten frame.
Some students love to express themselves through free drawing! They are experimenting with colours, and trying new things. Look how these two students are copying each other's way to draw clouds.
